AN accident in which a police van hit a pedestrian in Burnley while answering a 999 call will not be referred to an outside body.
Lancashire Police's professional standards board will oversee the incident involving a marked Ford Transit van in Padiham Road.
Police were responding to reports of a man armed with a knife outside a shop in Burnley Road, Padiham, when officers believe a man ran into the path of their vehicle, hitting the windscreen.
The injured pedestrian - a 63-year-old man, from Padiham Road - was taken to hospital following the incident, just past the Tim Bobbin pub at about 1.30am on Saturday.
He was not connected with the call police were responding to.
Yesterday he was still in hospital after treatment for a broken ankle, shoulder and ribs as well as a gashed head, police said.
After the accident officers referred the case to the force's professional standards board which passed it onto the Independent Police Complaint's Commission (IPCC).
The IPCC decided the incident was not serious enough to intervene.
