FIREFIGHTERS were put through their paces by Lancashire-based engineers during training on how to respond to difficult traffic incidents involving commercial vehicles.

The Lancashire branch of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers simulated a scenario for 30 fire officers, at Sappi Paper Mill, in Blackburn, which tested their skills in rescuing people trapped in a car, and an unstable articulated trailer.

They were also given lessons on the dangers of dealing with air pressure braking systems, and suspensions.

Nick Ingham, watch manager at Blackburn Fire Station, said: “It was a rare opportunity to re-create a commercial vehicle accident, and allowed firefighters to train on rescue techniques in a safe and controlled environment.”
