DEMOLITION work has begun on the former Padiham County Primary School building.
The site, which faces onto Burnley Road, has been vacant for four years, and the land is expected to be put up for sale by its owners, Lancashire County Council, once the building has been flattened.
A deal between LCC and an agreed buyer fell through in 2011, and the 105-year-old building has been left empty ever since.
County Coun Marcus Johnstone, who represents Padiham and Burnley West, said: “It is not before time that work has started on this building. It has been empty for four years and will be a much more marketable site when the building is cleared.
“It’s disgraceful that it’s taken this long for work to begin.”
