A TEN-year-old boy has raised £300 for charity when he made a gruelling 35 mile trip from Blackpool to Great Harwood on his bike.
And it’s not the first time Donovan Pearson, who lives in Rishton with his family, has made the trip. He raised £400 for Cancer Research UK by cycling in the opposite direction when he was seven.
Proud mum Rachel, 40, said: “He did it because my dad had prostate cancer and he wanted to help the people who helped his grandad get better.
“He wanted to do it again but this time with all the money going to East Lancashire Hospice. I’m immensely proud.”
Donovan and his dad Garry, 42, set off to Blackpool at 4am on Sunday morning accompanied by Nick Gaskell from Gaskell’s Motor Bodies in Great Harwood.
Nick drove the father and son duo in a Nissan Leaf and has donated the money saved in fuel – the Leaf is a 100 per cent electric car – to the hospice.
After posing for pictures in front of Blackpool Tower, the pair set off on their long journey along the coast to Lytham St Annes and down past Warton and Freckleton.
After a quick break at Deepdale Retail Park in Preston, they set off again, arriving at Great Harwood’s Farmers’ Maket just after noon.
The family owns Expression Cakes in Great Harwood and has a stall at the monthly market, where mum Rachel was waiting.
Garry said: “My legs are quite sore but Donovan’s are fine – he could do it again today. He’s only ten so I had to do it with him.
“It was harder work than last time too, it’s all up hill once you get to the M6. When we got to the market we had a drink and then helped out on the stall.
“I’m really proud of him.”
Nick said: “Garry and I talked about it and he asked if I wanted to bring the Leaf as a support vehicle.
“Donovan did not look all that tired.”
