ASDA stores in Lancashire are collecting donations for the region’s foodbanks.
This weekend, a special trolley will be placed in the foyer of Burnley Asda in Princess Way to collect donations for the Community Solutions foodbank, based in Accrington and Burnley and volunteers from the Blackburn Foodbank will be collecting non perishible items at Blackburn and Darwen braches of Asda.
Asda in Hollymount, Rawtenstall will also welcome volunteers from the Raft Foundation Foodbank in Rossendale on August 17 and 18 for their supermarket drive.
The Lancashire Telegraph is campaigning to ensure children do not go hungry in East Lancashire this summer because their families cannot afford food and they aren’t able to get their usual free school meals.
We are urging readers to back local food banks after an article revealed that the shocking extent of food poverty in our region was leading to cases of malnutrition in children.
Ros Duerden, manager of the Blackburn Foodbank said: “Since we opened in November, we have given away over 30,000 meals.
“The need for donations is as great, if not greater than ever.
“Supermarket drives are a brilliant way of collecting donations and meeting with the community.
“People are always so generous and we are really looking forward to it.”
Kirsty Entwistle, service section leader at Asda Darwen said: “After these drives are over, we are hoping to work with the Darwen Larder foodbank to put something in place to support them permenantly.
“It’s sad that people need foodbanks but the work they are doing is wonderful.
“We are really happy to be supporting them.”
