A HEADTEACHER has been honoured for his commitment to making his school more eco-friendly.

Ian Holden, head of St Mary’s CE Primary School in Rawtenstall, was given the Eco Supporter Award for Teachers at the It’s Our Planet Awards in July.

The gong was for his part in the school’s development of its outside woodland area.

The Haslingden Road school has carried out the restoration of an old environmental area beside the school which is now used in all areas of the curriculum.

The awards aim to highlight the growing importance of green issues in schools and to demonstrate the commitment of children and young people to environmental improvements.

The annual event is run by environmental charity Groundwork Pennine Lancashire.

Pupils and teachers attended the ceremony at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel on July 19.

You can hear about the school’s work on its open day.
