THE footpath connecting St Albans Road and Shawbrook Close in Rishton will have an obstacle fitted to prevent horseriders.
Several complaints have been made about the path, which is in a state of disrepair, while pushchair and wheelchair users have struggled on the pitted surface.
An a-frame was due to be installed two years ago after complaints from residents but the plans were shelved after a meeting between equestrians and councillors.
Now, after an increase in irresponsible riders, one will be fitted at the entrance to the path, Rishton councillors decided.
It will allow pedestrians, prams and wheelchairs through but force riders to dismount.
Coun Ken Moss said: “Churned-up gardens, damaged driveways and terrified pedestrians are of concern through a general lack of respect from a handful of riders. It will upset a few people but we’ve had situations where young riders have been thrown off and horses have bolted through the Petre Estate.”
A sum of £6,000 has been put aside to bring the path back up to standard.
