A TEENAGE girl suffered head injuries after being hit by a car.

Witnesses to the collision on Blackburn Road in Haslingden said they saw the girl laying injured in the road, calling for her mother before help arrived.

Police closed the road for two and half hours to allow for accident investigation close to the Winfields department store.

The incident, at 12.40pm yesterday, happened shortly after the 17-year-old got off a bus and crossed the road.

She was involved in a collision with a Nissan X Trail driven by a 54-year-old woman who was uninjured.

A group of residents and passers-by stopped to help before the teenager was airlifted to Royal Blackburn Hospital by the North West Air Ambulance.

She was said to be in a stable condition in hospital last night.

Victoria Sharkey from nearby Elle’s Hair Studio said: “She was hysterical and screaming.

“It was terrible. There were a lot of people who came running when they heard her.”

Owner of the salon, Joanne Sharkey added: “She was calling for her mum, and seemed to be very upset.

“She was definitely in shock. She was moving her arms around like she was scared.

“There have been quite a few accidents on this stretch of road. They’ve reduced the speed to 30mph, but they still fly down here.

“I don’t know that’s what happened this time, but it is a problem. We have been so worried about her since it happened.

“I wish we could know she was all right.”

Police appealed for witnesses and Sergeant Tracey Ward from the road policing unit said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have witnessed what happened to come forward and contact the police.

“The victim is in a stable condition in hospital and her family are with her.

“We have specially trained family liaison officers supporting them and we are investigating to establish exactly what has happened.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the road policing unit on 101, quoting log reference number 605 of July 30.
