A PROPOSAL being considered by Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Foundation to sell a section of land — given by Queen Mary I — for houses has met with uproar from members of the board.

A planning application has not yet been submitted for the potential development, which could include up to 150 houses on the site off Pendle Road, near Highmoor Farm.

But trustees were told at a meeting that the land could be sold to take advantage of the growing interest by housing developers in Clitheroe.

Clitheroe town councillor Jim Shervey, who was at the meeting, said: “This plan would not be in the interests of the town, the school or the foundation.

“There are already too many housing applications going in for Clitheroe and this would not be welcomed by the community.

Bill Honeywell, the foundation’s chairman of finance said: “Recently, the trustees were advised that now might be an appropriate time to consider submitting an outline planning application for residential development on part of their landholding in Clitheroe.

“The trustees are currently considering this advice and no decision has been made at the present time.”
