PARENTS have been urged to keep a close eye on their children over the summer holidays after two young children were injured in road accidents in Nelson.
On Saturday, a six-year-old boy broke his nose after he ran into the side of a taxi as he crossed Perth Street.
And on July 14, a three-year-old boy fractured his ankle after running out onto Carr Road, Sgt Claire Pearson said: “During the summer months, we tend to see an increase in child casualties, especially in residential terraced streets.
“With the warmer weather, more children play outside in the afternoon and early evenings and a moment’s carelessness can lead to a child running out in front of a car.
“We’ve already seen two children injured as a result of them running out onto a road, which has been desperately worrying for the families involved.
“Clearly, we are doing all we can to prevent these incidents from happening in the first place but clearly parents have a crucial role.
“Our advice is not to let very young children play out unsupervised and to know where your children are at all times.”
