A TRIO of Burnley fans face being banned from games after an alleged brawl was arranged after the Clarets’ pre-season friendly in Cumbria.

Six football fans were arrested after Burnley’s 4-1 victory over Carlisle United, after a tip-off that a fight had been organised in the city centre.

Five were said to be Clarets fans and the remaining man detained was a Carlisle United supporter, according to Cumbria Constabulary.

Supt Mark Pannone, the force’s match commander said: “Due to positive, preventative policing tactics, disorder was prevented in Carlisle city centre.

“A fight was being arranged between opposing fans and Cumbria Constabulary acted to prevent such an incident from happening.

“These people are being interviewed and, if appropriate, football banning orders will be sought to prevent these people causing problems in the forthcoming season.”

Later, it was confirmed that the three Burnley fans, originally detained on suspicion of using threatening behaviour, had been released on police bail until August 25, along with the Carlisle fan.

The trio are said to include two Burnley men, aged 25 and 29, and a 25-year-old Blackburn man.

The spokesman also confirmed that the two remaining Burnley supporters had been released without charge and no further action would be taken against them. Several fans reported an inc-reased police presence for the fixture, with supporters escorted from the station to the Brunton Park ground and a number of additional officers positioned inside the stadium.

More than 420 fans are believed to have made the 222-mile round trip from East Lancashire to the League One club for the fixture.
