MORE than 1,000 people have signed a petition to fight the closure of Slaidburn Country Practice.

The small medical practice faces being shut down within two years after the NHS published new plans which would wipe out much of its budget.

If the Townend surgery is to close, more than 1,000 patients would face journeys of eight miles or more to see a doctor in Clitheroe.

Dorothy Pearson, chairman of the Friends of Slaidburn Country Practice, said: “We are delighted that so many people have registered their support for the centre.

“It’s of vital importance to the area and we are doing all we can to keep it open.

“The local community would suffer hugely if it was to close and it’s great that people have got behind this campaign.

“I have personally written to the Prime Minister and the Health Secretary about the issue and we have also received support from Nigel Evans MP.

“I hope this is just the beginning and we will all continue the fight until the end.”

At a public meeting on July 1, 250 people pledged their support for the campaign and a steering committee has now been set up to co-ordinate the campaign.

Dr Jane Read, who has worked at the practice for six years, said: “It seems like people who are not patients are also signing the petitions, which is fantastic.

“We are all really pleased with the response at the health centre and we all hope it continues.

“It’s amazing that so many people have decided to support this campaign.”

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans said: “This clearly shows the massive level of support for this health centre and how important it is to the community as a whole.”
