A YOB who attacked a pub boss with a glass then went on holiday to Magaluf instead of turning up for court.

Jake Frankland, 18, hit Michael Haddon, stand-in landlord at the Cross Guns pub in Church with the glass after he simply asked him to hand it back when he left.

Frankland, who had taken drunk and drugs, struck the victim on the head, inflicting pain and discomfort, Burnley Crown Court was told.

The defendant, of Bradshaw Street West, Accrington, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm last September 2 and failing to surrender.

Frankland, who had been in custody since his return from Spain on June 12, was given 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, with 18 months' supervision, 100 hours unpaid work and a three month 8pm to 7am curfew.

The hearing was told Frankland had been binge drinking and abusing illicit substances when he struck .

Robert Elias, for Frankland, said he got himself into such a state that when the landlord made a perfectly reasonable and lawful request, he impulsively hit him.

“It's quite clear that it's alcohol and illicit substances that have triggered this offence, rather than any innate violence in the defendant."

Sentencing, Recorder Mark Ainsworth said Frankland had an appalling record, had committed offence after offence after offence since he was a child, but was in a crown court for the first time.

The judge said Mr Haddon was simply trying to keep order in the pub and asked for the glass back.

Recorder Ainsworth said people normally went straight to custody for doing what he did and when he first read the papers in the case, he anticipated he would be sending Frankland to detention for 12 months Recorder Ainsworth said he was giving the defendant one final chance and it may be that standing in the crown court and starting a new relationship may be sufficient to make him grow up. The judge added:" This really is an opportunity that you have been offered. You would be wise to approach it that way."
