TWO rare black and white nineteenth century Blackburn one pound notes sold for £630 at an auction yesterday.
One note sold for £360, while the other fetched £270 at the auction at Spink in London.
Both notes featured the words ‘Blackburn Bank' and were proofs – notes printed for inspection before they went into mass production.
The notes were produced at a time when there were hundreds of privately-owned banks in England and Wales, all printing their own money because it was too difficult and dangerous to bring in large quantities of cash from London.
