A SCOUT group has raised fears over plans to build 20 new homes on playing fields near their headquarters.
Leaders at the 2nd Rossendale Scout Group are worried that if plans are given the go-ahead by the council tonight, more than 160 children will miss out on using the fields, off Burnley Road, Bacup.
The group is one of 15 organisations and residents objecting to the planning application by social housing landlord Green Vale Homes which wants permision to build 10 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom homes on a council-owned field, just south of Bacup Hub.
The Scouts said the fields are used by scores of youngsters each week for various activities.
The group said in a report: “The playing field provides opportunities to 160 young people each week, with their activities making use of the green space, alongside other local children.
“The increased traffic and on-street parking which would result from the proposal will pose a significant risk to children crossing the main road to access their premises.
“Bacup has a very low police presence in the town centre.
“What additional measures will be put in place to counter anti-social behaviour and damage to property?”
However, council officers are recommending the proposals be approved.
In the report, officers say: “The proposed development will, for the most part, occupy land within the urban boundary of Bacup.
“The small part of the site which lies within countryside is not to be developed in a manner that will cause significant harm to the essentially open and rural character of the adjacent countryside.
“Furthermore, the proposed development is in a sustainable location, and all of the proposed dwellings are to be for affordable housing.
“The proposal will not unduly detract from visual, or neighbour amenity, public health, or highway safety.”
The plans are due to be considered at tonight’s meeting of the planning committee.
