A 50-FOOT Mickey Mouse image is dominating a Burnley town centre street as a new nightclub prepares to open its doors.
Club boss Leon Kelly commissioned Brighton-based graffiti artist Aroe to paint the giant cartoon character on the side of his new dance music venue Level One in Bull Street.
Leon, who will run the club with business partner Alison Frost, said: “We wanted to create a talking point.
“We could have done anything but we thought Mickey Mouse was recognisable and it wouldn’t offend anyone.
“It’s not in a conservation area, it’s not a listed building and it’s not got an advertisement on it so we were allowed to do it.
“The paint was coming off the walls of the building and when we sold the idea to the landlord and said we’d repaint it he was happy for us to do it.
“We haven’t had any complaints, and people have been taking pictures with it and putting them on Facebook.
“Disney have even posted a picture of it on their official instagram account and it’s had 45,000 likes.”
Areo, who belongs to graffiti collective MSK, took two days to complete the artwork, and has also covered the inside walls of the club with reproductions of logos from artists including Daft Punk, Run DMC and Kanye West.
The new club, which opens on July 25, will follow in the footsteps of its Accrington namesake, which has previously hosted a Backstreet Boys aftershow party.
Leon added: “This will be a sister club. We’re creating our own brand of Level One and we’ll be holding celebrity aftershow parties and headline acts.
“We want to create the new Luminar. We’ll hopefully open a third club in Preston within the next 12 months, and we want to have five Level Ones open, running and functioning within five years.”
The Burnley club, formerly open as Inside Out, will open from 10pm to 5am and an entry fee of £2 will be charged on Friday and Saturday nights.
