A NURSE is set to face a health watchdog over allegations that she mismanaged a diabetic attack at a care home in Accrington.
Michelle Brennan, who formerly worked at Addison Court, is facing a Nursing and Midwifery Council hearing after an incident last May.
She was the nurse in charge at the Addison Street care home when a diabetic patient was found to be ‘clammy and unresponsive’, during a shift on May 22 and 23.
The elderly man was given a sugary drink but failed to respond, a NMC investigating committee was told.
Mrs Brennan gave the man 33 units of insulin at around 5am which was supposed to be administered with breakfast.
The man continued to be unresponsive and the nurse rang the medical helpline 111 for advice.
Later paramedics attended, the investigating committee heard, and the man was given intravenous fluids and taken to hospital.
The NMC hearing was told that Mrs Brennan was later dismissed for the alleged misamanagement of the hypoglycaemic attack.
An interim order was secured against Mrs Brennan, which limits her nursing work for the next 18 months.
In a ruling it was stated that: “The panel noted that although Mrs Brennan reported the incident to her supervisor, there was a concern that she had not highlighted gaps in her knowledge, creating a risk that such an incident could occur again.”
She must work under the supervision of a registered nurse and inform any future employment of the outstanding proceedings.
The nurse will face a full investigation committee hearing, on the main allegations, within the next few months.
