RENEWED calls have been made to improve road safety in a Colne ‘rat-run’ after a pensioner was left fighting for his life in hospital.
Police said the 79-year-old was unpacking his Peugeot 307, in Harrison Drive, at 5pm on Thursday when he was hit by a blue Volkswagen Transporter van.
Officers said he suffered “multiple serious injuries”, and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.
The accident came a month after residents criticised the ‘lack of road safety’ around the area.
Sergeant Gareth Hill said: “We are trying to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this incident, and would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time who witnesses what happened to come forward and contact the police, if they have not yet done so.
“If anybody has any information which they think could help with our investigation, I would urge them to come forward.”
A meeting is set to be held with representatives from the police, Lancashire County Council, and residents, to discuss how to improve road safety.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 14, at the North Valley Community Centre.
