A PUSH on a set of stairs led to a Blackburn man falling on to a piece of glass which lodged in his face.

Michael Harries had been invited back to a flat in Fawcett Close, Blackburn, prior to the incident taking place.

A group of people, including victim Roy Pickering, had carried on drinking before he ended up being pushed and tumbled down the stairs.

Harries, 32, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.

He appeared at Preston Crown Court for sentencing via a prison video link.

David Farley, prosecuting, said Mr Pickering and his friends had been out on March 14 this year in Blackburn town centre.

They met Harries in the Postal Order pub and he was one of those invited back to his flat to carry on drinking.

At one stage, Mr Pickering became angry, throwing bottles in apparent annoyance. Broken bottles were scattered around. People ended up on the stairs and Harries ended up pushing Mr Pickering.

He landed at the bottom and woke in a confused state, with a piece of glass in his face.

Mark Stuart, defending, said: “It would seem that Mr Pickering has fallen and may have got glass in his head, as a result. All of the parties had had a considerable amount to drink.

“The defendant knows that a custodial sentence is inevitable.

“He will take all the help he can get.

“He knows that unless he sorts himself out, he will commit more and worse offences.”

Harries was given 12 months prison, with two months on top for breaching a suspended sentence he was on at the time.

He will have to pay a £100 statutory surcharge.

The judge, Recorder David Turner QC, told him: “This was a nasty offence.”
