OLYMPIC champion Steven Burke will be taking part in his home town race next week – fresh from a royal appointment.
Steven, who won the gold in the team pursuit at last year’s Olympics, will be taking part in the Colne Grand Prix next Wednesday.
Organisers hope the attraction of Steven, and fellow team pursuit gold medalist Ed Clancy, will see crowds flocking to Colne for the 10th Grand Prix race.
Coun Joe Cooney, leader of Pendle Council, said: “He was training intensively for the London 2012 Olympics last year and missed the big race in his home town.
“We’re not complaining though – he came back with a gold medal and the team broke two world records.”
Last week, Steven was awarded his MBE by Prince Charles for his services to cycling.
Steven said he couldn’t wait to line-up for the race.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to the big race in my home town. There’ll be a brilliant atmosphere.
“I’ll be launching the new Colne Guide on the podium after the big race.”
Nick Rudge, managing director of cottages4you, the event’s headline sponsor, said: “We’re delighted to be sponsoring the Colne Grand Prix in 2013 and wish Steven and all the riders competing the best of luck.
“This is a highly anticipated sporting event in the local calendar. We're proud to be part of it during what looks set to be a great year for cycling in the UK.”
The free event starts at 6.45pm with race results at 9pm.
