POLICE have released CCTV footage of the moment a Burnley man was viciously attacked in an unprovoked town centre assault.

Detectives hope the move will help them trace the attacker who left a 37-year-old man with a broken leg.

The victim, of Dugdale Road, was leaving the Sun Bar takeaway, St James Street, Burnley, just before 1am on Friday August 18, when he was set upon by two men who beat and kicked him, watched by two women.

Inspector Damien Darcy said most of the victim's injuries had been caused by the man in the checked shirt, who repeatedly kicked his victim, and appealed for the other man and the two women to come forward.

He said: "This was a vicious and unprovoked assault.

"This man has simply walked out of the takeaway and they have just assaulted him for no reason.

"He was left with a badly broken leg which has still not healed, and we are very keen to catch the people who did this to him. It was quite late at night, but it was a Friday so there would still have been quite a few people who had been out in the town centre and might have seen something."

The main attacker is white around 5ft 8in and of a large build, with brown hair and a chubby face.

He was wearing a checked shirt.

The other man was also white, slim, wearing a black top with white writing on the back.

Police are particularly anxious to speak to the women with them, who were not involved in the assault but saw it taking place.

One was blonde and of medium build, wearing a black top and blue jeans.

The second had dark hair, was slim and wearing a black strapless dress.

They, or anyone else with information about the attack, should call police on 01282 425001, or Crimestoppers, free and anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
