BLACKBURN with Darwen’s Older People’s Forum will be holding a public event to encourage better understanding of immigration in the area.
They hope to breakdown barriers between different communities and remove myths that surround immigration and welfare benefits.
A speaker and question and answer session will accompany the forum’s monthly meeting which will take place at 1pm on July 1 in Blackburn Town Hall.
Brian Todd, chairman of the forum, said: “Some older people still believe some people come into the country just to get things for free from the government.
“That is not true at all and represents a very outdated attitude which is harmful to community relations in ethnically diverse areas such as Blackburn.
“People come to this area to work hard and it’s important that we hold events like this to change attitudes by providing people with a chance to speak and ask questions.”
