A BRIGHTER summer holiday is in store for disadvantaged youngsters in Burnley thanks to two projects which have been supported by Lancashire Youth Council.
More than £5,000 has been allocated for initiatives designed to keep young people off the streets – and out of mischief – during the break.
Supporters of the Fraser Street Group are celebrating after being awarded £3,760 by the youth council's grant scheme.
Four trips are planned by the Burnley Lane organisation to Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Alton Towers, Flamingo Land and The Sandcastle, also in Blackpool, for various dates during August.
A Fraser Street spokesman, making the application, said: “Some young people will not have had a holiday or even have the opportunity to leave the town.
“This money will make a massive difference to their lives.”
Some of the young people involved with Fraser Street are volunteering to take part in sessions for junior members.
Meanwhile another grant has been given out to the Brunshaw Action Group, for £1,700, for a similar summer holiday activities programme. Proposals have been drawn up for local youngsters to go ice skating, go-karting, paintballing and quad biking.
A Brunshaw Action Group spokesman said in support of the bid: “Without activities such as these young people will become bored and will either spend all their time indoors or hang around on the streets, with the potential for anti-social behaviour becoming an issue.”
The group has involved young people in the organisation of the outings.
