Simon Webbe, Joe Swash and Nicola McLean told their camp mates they had failed a Bushtucker Trial – only to then reveal they had won eight out of a possible nine stars.
The trio agreed to try and trick their fellow I’m A Celebrity… contestants into pretending they had been unsuccessful at Dread Over Heels but despite the former EastEnders star suggesting they maintained the ruse until dinner time, they soon gave in to break the happy news.
However, former Dollar star David Van Day insisted he knew they had been lying.
He claimed: “They returned looking theatrically gloomy. I wasn’t fooled at all. I knew they were joking but it wasn’t really funny.”
The trial saw Simon and Joe strapped to large wheels – joined in their Perspex containers by jungle critters - with Nicola handed a panel to spin the wheels according to their instructions in order to pass balls from a start shoot to a finishing point.
Despite their success, singer Simon was frustrated with their failure to bag the final meal.
He complained: “I can’t believe I dropped that one. I used to play football, I should have known better.”
They other celebrities later enjoyed the results of their labour, with Simon cooking up a feast of kangaroo tail, sweet potatoes and broad beans.
