This week Dancing on Ice was off to the movies! With four men and two women left in the competition it really is hotting up with everyone wanting to get through to the next stage.
Torvill and Dean opened the show with the professional skaters with ‘Luck be a Lady Tonight’.
The required element this week was the solo spin, on one foot with a minimum of two turns. It needs to show balance and good posture. This is something that the professional skater cannot help them with and it will be interesting to see how some of them fare!
The skaters all looked glamorous skating out in floor length gowns and suits when their names were announced. As so it was on to the first couple:
Danny Young and Frankie
Music: Gotta Fly Now – Rocky
I thought Danny skated his best performance and performed a lovely lift with Frankie. His required element was a little shaky during the spin but he did manage 3 revolutions. I think Danny with his top off started many a female pulses racing throughout his routine. Having said that, I still haven’t warmed to this couple as much as others as I always feel that there is something missing in his skating. Danny’s score in the early twenties was well deserved though and he has improved since the previous week.
Daniella Westbrook and Matthew
Music: Summer Nights - Grease
Daniella looked really cute in her pink sparkly Sandy outfit and it really fitted the music. Her skating was a little high in the knees at the beginning of the skate but she soon relaxed and I thought it was a good performance and she acted it very well! Her spin was very quick with only one and a half turns and didn’t have the balance to make it rotate more. But as an overall performance it was well done although I think she could have done it better which she did say in the interview.
Mikey Graham and Melanie
Music: When You Say Nothing At All – Ronan Keating (Notting Hill)
I love that Mikey skated to band mate Ronan’s song!! I had my fingers crossed for him this week as last week was a little shaky, he didn’t disappoint. His spin was about three turns and span well with a good position. He presented the routine well with nice arm movements and it was much better than I expected. I think his skating can develop more with a deeper knee bend, which will make it smoother across the ice.
Gary Lucy and Maria
Music: You Never Can Tell - Pulp Fiction
I thought that this was a really fun performance and Gary skated it really well although his spin wasn’t too good. He projected really well although his movements could have been stronger and his skating was smooth across the ice. There were big discrepancies between the judges and I think Jason was wrong to give it a 3.0. Jason disagreed with Nicky although with Nicky knowing what skating is, I will stick with him! Jason calling it dull was out of order and even when Karen told him to listen to the skaters on the panel he said "I don’t need to listen to you, you talk a load of nonsense!" HOW RUDE!! He isn’t a skater and as much as he knows about performance, with a pair of skates on your feet it is a completely different story. Once again I would love to see him try to skate and perform at the same time!
Kieron Richardson and Brianne
Music: Pink Panther
Another required element missed! But other than that I thought that Kieron skated this routine very well and acted very well also, which made it fun to watch. I think that this was his best performance and he deserved 21 as his score. I was a little disappointed that the spin didn’t work out but it didn’t detract from the skating and I thought Kieron and Brianne performed well together.
Hayley Tammadon and Daniel
Music: Jai Ho – Slumdog Millionaire
Wow! Hayley came out with real force and it was an amazing routine with the right vibe running all the way through it. Her spin was the best of the night and the lifts had great positions and also extended exit positions. I was not surprised that Hayley and Dan got 6.0 across the board as it was performed excellently. Hayley is definitely the one to beat and I hope she keeps it up until the final as that skate was amazing. It’s not just the skating, which is smooth, her dance movements are always finished off and precise. Definitely thumbs up from me!
The Skate-off
So Daniella and Mikey were in the skate off – the show is getting really difficult now with so many candidates wanting to be in the final. Daniella was up first and I think she was a little smoother in her skate and the performance was nice, it was definitely better the second time.
Mikey also had a good skate with a strong spin to close the programme. It was a really close one between the two and I couldn’t call it, it just goes on personal preference. It was left to Robin to have the final vote and with three votes to two, Daniella was saved. I felt really sorry for Mikey but unfortunately we have to lose someone every week.
