Week five and the skaters are finally finding their feet! Torvill and Dean opened the show skating to Pixie Lott singing ‘Use Somebody’ live in the studio. Their routine was beautiful as was the live music. This weeks required element was the ‘pairs spin’. This requires both skaters to spin on one foot whilst working together. Two turns were needed and if possible, the judges wanted to see three.

Gary Lucy and Maria
Music: Good Vibrations – Beach Boys
I thought Gary skated will this week and looked very secure in his skating. The pair spin was nicely done and he lifted Maria with ease. His performance was much better than previous weeks and he projected well. A good score of 18.5 was well deserved and hopefully he will carry on progressing through next week.

Heather Mills and Matt
Music: Chain of Fools – Aretha Franklin
I thought Heather came out with a great attitude and attacked the choreography but she was high in her knees and the skating didn’t flow as well as it has done. The required element was short in turns as well which was a pity as Heather reached the difficult ‘camel’ position. She looked more confident skating along which was good and the judges had positive comments for Heather.

Danny Young and Frankie
Music: Tiny Dancer – Elton John
I thought Danny had improved since last week, but there is still work to be done. He was slightly out of time with Frankie in some places, which detracted from the performance. He looked safer whilst skating which made the drape lift work well. I think the ballet class had the desired effect and his arm movements were better. I’m afraid to say that I agreed with a point that Jason made – Danny does tend to skate with his mouth open sometime and this doesn’t help with the look of the routine.

Emily Atack and Fred
Music: The Sweet Escape – Gwen Stefani
Emily has made more improvements this week, which was great to see. She has the capability to skate alone and it was really nice to see that incorporated in the routine. Fred and Emily managed a platter lift that requires some strength from both skaters and it looked nice in the programme. She seemed to perform more as well and also seemed to enjoy it and this showed in her face. I think that more concentration on the skating between elements will make it even better.

Mikey Graham and Melanie
Music: River of Dreams – Billy Joel
I love Mikey’s face when he skates as he shows his enjoyment and it’s a pleasure to watch. Watching his VT before he skated he seems to have had a tough week and I thought he pulled off a great performance. His pair spin was great as they were both in the ‘camel’ position and that is extremely difficult to do as he was controlling Melanie at the same time. He had a little stumble but recovered well. It wasn’t his best week but it was still a nice routine to watch.

Sharron Davies and Pavel
Music: Fast Car – Mutya Buena
Sharron showed a softness to her skating that hasn’t been seen before, and I thought she skated to this slow music well which is not what I expected. She had a great turn out of the foot on the exits from elements which in turn, gave a great leg line. I’m not sure about the costume for this programme, I think it should have been a dress to go with the music but that is just personal opinion. They received their highest score for this and it was well deserved.

Kieron Richardson and Brianne
Music: Pencil Full of Lead – Paolo Nutini
I thought this routine was full of energy and it was really fun to watch! There was a little music problem part way through but they carried on through it. He seemed to really enjoy this routine and that was shown through his movement. He seems to be relaxing more whilst skating and that is great to see. I think he has a lot of potential and I can’t wait to see their routine next week.

Hayley Tammadon and Daniel
Music: Just Dance – Lady Gaga
Oh no! I absolutely loved this routine even though they fell over! When they replayed the clip it seemed that Daniel just lost his edge but it didn’t detract away from the programme and they got up and carried on as if it didn’t happen. They also managed the Head Banger at the end and it was great. The energy was there throughout and all the basic skating was well done and with quality. I think that they are the couple to beat and I can’t wait for next week!

Hilary Jones and Alexandra
Music: Truly, Madly, Deeply – Savage Garden
Hilary looked a lot more secure this week and even managed a lift during this routine. The pair’s spin was okay and although it turned slow, they completed the required two turns. He is making progress and is improving week on week. Everyone has to remember that he is the oldest competitor in the programme and to learn a new skill as daunting as skating is something that he should be applauded for.

Danniella Westbrook and Matthew
Music: Dance with Me – Debelah Morgan
Danniella hits some gorgeous positions as he skates and has great hand and arm movements making her lovely to watch. She always seems to get into the mood of the routine and this was no exception. She finished off all the tango positions and had great interaction with Matthew throughout. It had attack and I can’t wait to see what her routine will be next week.

The Skate-off
So Heather and Kieron were in the skate off. Heather was up first and I felt that she relaxed more for this performance and really enjoyed it. She also seemed more stable during this skate than her previous one.

Kieron gave a strong performance and also seemed to be enjoying himself. I think the skate off helps relieve pressure and the celebrities relax more and remember that it’s meant to be fun.

So four votes to one, Kieron stays in! I am quite disappointed that Heather has gone as I don’t think she was the worst skater, but that is the nature of a reality show competition!
