Star of the Dutch Dancing on Ice and former British Figure Skating Champion, Blackburn's Dannielle Guppy gives her view on the latest Dancing on Ice series.
Week 7 of Dancing on Ice and Will Young was singing live in the studio with Torvill and Dean skating on the ice around him, which made for a lovely performance from them all.
The required element for this week is a chain of 4 moves linked together which could cause problems for some of the skaters as it’s harder to link movements than doing them in isolation.
And so, with the semi-final only three weeks away, it was time for the first skater.
Zoe Salmon and Matt
Music: Mamma Mia – Abba: This was definitely Abba with Attitude! Zoe looked as though she had regained the fighting spirit and she was lower in her knees than the previous weeks which made her move more smoothly across the ice. She really hits some nice positions and I would like to see this become more consistent. The linked movements were well executed with her spiral having a great turn out of the foot. This routine gave Zoe her highest score yet and it was well deserved.
Melinda Messenger and Fred
Music: Let’s Hear It for the Boy – Denise Williams: When skating with Fred, Melinda looks comfortable but when skating solo she stiffens in the leg which affects the flow of the routine. Her crossovers aren’t properly crossed and I would have liked to see her have more of a chance to work on these. The lifts were really nice which shows that as a partnership they worked well together and she had trust in Fred. The required element was well done and she looked confident out on the ice.
Donal McIntyre and Florentine
Music: Everybody Hurts – R.E.M: Donal has improved every week and this week was no exception. He could have struggled with the routine as it was such a different pace but I thought he did really well. There was a slight stumble but he recovered well which was key to the routine and the required element was completed with ease. He always seems to have some new tricks in and this week was the backwards teapot and the standing on one foot whilst supporting his partner. The marks were low because of the trip but overall I was impressed with his performance.
Roxanne Pallett and Daniel
Music: I Wanna Be Loved By You – Marilyn Monroe: This was a very cute routine and finally Roxanne gets the Headbanger in! Her skating was more secure and her backwards crossovers looked much improved. I thought she performed the routine well and in character. If she wants to stay in the competition she will have to work very hard as the difference is now starting to show between the couples.
Jessica Taylor and Pavel
Music: Unbreak my Heart – Toni Braxton: This was a difficult programme for Jessica as it was packed with complex footwork but she did a brilliant job. Her performance was much better and reflected the tone of the music. The required element was done solo and completed well. I always think that she looks great out on the ice and this week was no exception. I would say that she needed to be a little lower in the drag and some of the leg extensions were not fully turned out with the foot but high marks reflected a good, strong performance.
Ray Quinn and Maria
Music: Rock Around The Clock – Bill Haley: Wow! What a fast paced routine but that didn’t stop every step being skated extremely well. The beginning of the routine set the pace with fast toe steps and kicks. He gets into character straight away and you cannot help but watch him. The required element was done very controlled and also solo which is more difficult. He interacts with Maria throughout the routine which shows that they have a solid partnership. Nearly a clean sweep of sixes for them again and well deserved.
Coleen Nolan and Stuart
Music: Shoop Shoop Song – Cher: There was slightly more skating from Coleen this week but she didn’t look entirely comfortable through the routine. She had to rely on Stuart for the required element which was done well but there was a little wobble on the end lift going up which again detracted from the performance. She looks as though her confidence is very low and relies on gliding on two feet a lot of the time.
The Skate-Off
I cannot believe that Jessica was in the skate-off – what the British public are doing I have no idea!
First up was Melinda and she looked as though she enjoyed skating the routine. A little mix up at the beginning didn’t detract from a pleasant performance.
Jessica skated the routine really well and the lift worked perfectly the second time around. So Jessica is through to next week which I think is the correct result as Melinda wasn’t technically as strong.
So we are now down to 6 couples and next week promises more of the hilarious ‘Make Me A Star’ clips!
