Lancashire Telegraph review by Jemma Humphreys from June 18, 2011.
For those who remember the cafe from the old Lord Square complex, it’s a welcome return for this town centre eaterie.
Although it returns with fond memories, opening in the former Cafe Beees site, El Greco’s has a lot to live up to.
And anyone expecting the plush decor of the last occupants will be disappointed.
It’s not what you might call a stylish establishment but, then again, it isn’t trying to be.
It’s not aiming for the coffee house market — it’s there to serve reasonably-priced, good quality food in a traditional no-frills cafeteria layout.
And the home-made offerings are about as tasty as I’ve tasted.
Four of us went to sample El Greco’s 2011 style, remembering our favourites from the 2007 menu when it was at the other side of town.
I went for the good old jacket potato, which was cooked perfectly and served with very little wait.
It was so large that I couldn’t finish it.
With a cheese and coleslaw filling and a side salad for £3.60 it was delicious, and I had change from a fiver including a drink and a snack for later.
My friends went for; steak pudding and chips (£4.25) described as the best pudding she’d had in years; the homemade steak pie served with chips and vegetables (£4.80), which was equally as popular with ample and tender pieces of steak; and a cheese and tomato toastie (£2.50)which was a little on the greasy side but hit the spot.
Sat upstairs with the view over the Cathedral grounds, or outside the front on Church Street, it’s one of the nicest locations in Blackburn.
It’s safe to say we’ve found a new lunchtime haunt.
