After a walk around Anglezark, we had worked up a healthy appetite and were ready for Sunday dinner in the Black Dog at Belmont.
It's a big old pub on the main road through the village. Inside there are lots of nooks and crannies as well as a big airy dining room.
As we sat down, it struck me that it was the first time that I had actually felt warm enough in a pub.
The menu was typical pub grub, with various meal deals and early bird offers, plus a few more unusual dishes and a good selection of healthy options, veggie and children's meals.
My hubby went for the "three courses for £12.50" deal choosing garlic mushrooms with stilton sauce, burger and chips, followed by bread and butter pud.
I opted for traditional Sunday roast with ice cream for dessert.
The mushrooms came in a rich creamy sauce, served with two pieces of garlic bread, and were delicious.
He who is easily pleased, was also quite happy with his burger and didn't complain about the chips that looked like the last dregs of a bag of frozen fries. I think he was still glowing from the creamy mushrooms!
My Sunday roast was standard stuff, the beef was good though the vegetables could have done with cooking a little longer. The ice cream was also standard, and the bread and butter pud came with custard, rather than ice cream as we had ordered.
But that proved to be a blessing for me as half way through, we swapped desserts and I discovered the bread and butter pud to be the star of the meal. It melted in your mouth, and really lifted what was destined to be a very average pub meal.
We came away feeling full and it wasn't expensive, with two drinks, there was still change from £25.
Although we didn't sample much from the bar, I should point out that The Black Dog is part of a long established Manchester family business, Joseph Holt, famed for its award winning dark mild and good value beers.
