It's been a long time since I've visited the Highfield pub, Croston, for an afternoon lunch.

With a large indoor funhouse and outdoor children's play area, it was a popular place for meals out when the children were younger.

Located in Southport Road, this large family-friendly pub has ample parking and children's facilities, although I've never known it to be over-run with children and on a midweek afternoon, the atmosphere was quiet and relaxing.

Taking advantage of the two-for-one meal deal on adult main courses, my now nearly grown-up daughter and I ordered garlic mushrooms and cheese potato wedges for a starter and the Cajan chicken and British steak and ale pie for mains.

The menu also offered a good range of vegetarian options.

As the deal meant that we would only pay for one of these reasonably priced meals I would have expected the chef to skimp on the portions, but that wasn't the case.

Although a little undercooked for my daughter's liking, the pile of wedges had been generously doused in melted cheese while a small plateful of large wild mushrooms in butter had a fresh and homecooked aroma.

Dipped in garlic mayo', each was tender and delicious.

Unless you've a particularly healthy appetite, don't choose the steak and ale pie, it's huge, especially with a generous helping of chips or mash with veg.

I ate the crisp and fresh vegetables and a small part of the pie.

It might have filled half the plate but most of the pastry was hard and too think with a lot of the meat stuck to the shell.

The Cajan chicken was tender and cooked with just enough spice.

With six of the most popular draught beers on offer and two real ales and excellent waitress service, the pub is well worth a visit although I wouldn't recommend the leather-look sofa's that glistened with greasy little finger prints.
