FOOD has only recently started being served at The Old Function Room in Darwen and with a love of pub grub, it would be rude for me not to try out their menu.

Following a refurbishment, the pub, formerly Craiglands, is warm and inviting, with an open fire and cosy atmosphere.

There’s plenty of seating with modern booths and comfy sofas but it was good to see there is a separate dining area from the open plan bar so we took a place there.

With a selection of nibbles and several main dishes it’s easy to make up your mind if you’re looking for a wholesome meal at a good price.

‘Proper chips’ cooked in beef dripping sound like the perfect bar snack at £2.25 or there’s Bury black pudding with piccalilli under £3.

But a more substantial meal was calling and without hesitation, I had to have a Darwen Tower burger. I wasn’t disappointed, after ordering at the bar and a 40-minute wait, the food was delivered freshly cooked, hot and well-presented.

Two 100 per cent beef burgers were served with cheese and streaky bacon, held together with a fluffy white bun, accompanied by a watercress salad, tomatoes, jalapeños and chillis. It was delicious.

The chips also deserve a mention. The Old Function Room knows how to do proper chips. They are the kind that will take you back to your childhood.

Fried in a chip pan, with a crispy coating and fluffy middle, seasoned with cracked sea salt, they are mouth- wateringly good.

At £7.95 it’s a great price and excellent value.

My other half took advantage of the specials board, choosing piri piri chicken with salad and fries. This was equally good, another delicious-looking and tasting dish.

So, if you’re looking for a new place to try, the Old Function Room is well worth it. We will certainly be returning for more.
