I couldn't wait a minute more
As I started school in 1944
Learning to read and write
And get my sums and spelling right.
Though we studied hard each day
We had time for lots of play
And were content with simple things,
Like skipping ropes and swings,
We played hopscotch in the street
And shared our secret hopes,
It only seems like yesterday
That we had skipping ropes,
Times were hard in many ways
But we enjoyed happy childhood days.
