Mayor De Castilla, £4.79, Sainsbury’s Down from £7.19, this red is from Spain’s Ribera Del Duero region of northern central Spain – Duero is the name for the river that becomes the Douro when it flows into Portugal.
Ribera reds are big rivals for Rioja, and Mayor de Castilla is the biggest Ribera seller in the home market.
The grape is Tina del Pais, a local name for Tempranillo.
Lovely, juicy and full of cherries.
