JUST a stone’s throw away from the splendour of the Lake District lie miles of sandy beaches, sprawling coastlines and charming villages that all encompass Morecambe Bay.
This famous bay boasts areas of outstanding beauty and combines breathtaking views with a wealth of attractions, offering visitors both a relaxed seaside retreat and a culture-rich experience.
The jewel in the crown is the coastal resort of Morecambe, which is undergoing an exciting transformation that will see it re-born with all the quirk and character for which it was once nationally famed.
The town’s five-mile stretch of seafront promenade is the perfect starting point for exploring.
Walk alongside the famous Eric Morecambe statue - opened by the Queen in 1999 - cast your eye across the bay to the Lakeland fells or soak up the sunshine on the golden beach.
A new memorial is also planned to celebrate the life of Dame Thora Hird.
Families will find no shortage of activities, with a multiplex Cinema, ten-pin bowling alley and the popular Happy Mount Park all within close proximity of the promenade.
Of course, one of Morecambe's biggest draws is the world famous Art Deco Midland Hotel which, since its grand re-opening after a multi-million pound renovation, has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Its penthouse suites and beautiful glass-fronted restaurant and sun terrace enjoy the best views in town.
Across the road from the hotel is the Festival Market which now features a new 'Poem Path' with sayings, poems and literary extracts about the environment and bird life of the Bay.
Birdwatchers flock to the resort, which has gained a reputation for being a breeding ground of international significance for migrating birds.
The attractive stone jetty features themed pavement games and sculptures along the way, from family favourite hopscotch to a maze, riddles and a huge mythical bird.
Happy Mount Park is a fun haven for all the family, with a paddling pool, play area, sports surface, crown green bowling, café and picnic areas.
And don't forget to take a peep inside the Winter Gardens which is also in line for restoration.
The 'Friends' of this famous theatre give guided tours which take in the rooftop balcony and backstage.
And if it's wet, chill out at Apollo Cinema multiscreen complex or try tenpin bowling at Morecambe Superbowl.
