As the Palestinian conflict unfolds daily, thousands of people across the UK and globally are engaged in fundraising activities aiming to provide vital supplies.
In a small corner of Blackburn, at the foot of Whalley Old Road beneath the Little Harwood arched bridge facing Beechwood Road, a family decided eight days ago to raise funds through a cake sale on their doorstep.
Abid Hussain said: “I was inspired after seeing the suffering of innocent women and children.
“I just knew I had to do something.
“I spoke to my niece and we decided to bake and sell cupcakes.
“We have been amazed at the response from people of all communities willing to help us.
“The youth especially have gone out of their way to promote the cause.
“Councillor Salim Sidat has put us in touch with Interpal and gone to great lengths to help with posters, publicity and more.
“We’d like to thank them all from the bottom of our hearts.”
What started as a doorstep enterprise has seen the family working 20 hours a day, selling from 9am till 9pm and baking by niece Amina Rashid, behind the scenes indoors and after hours.
Sales are averaging about 500 a day daily with cake donations at a pound a cake.
The target is to raise £5,000 with all funds going to provide much relief to people in the Gaza strip.
Niece Halima Rashid added “It is a duty of all Muslims to do something.
“We are all accountable to Allah and must help the suffering people”.
