ALAN Carr is an engaging chat-show host, who displays a nice line in on-the-edge sarcasm, while still managing to remain on good terms with his guests — not always an easy task.

This week’s main guest was Lee Mack, who, while the-funny-as-leprosy Michael McIntyre is missing from our screens, has taken the opportunity to up his profile.

Unlike McIntyre, Mack comes across as down to earth, likeable and genuinely funny.

His comedy is generally anecdotal, man down the pub stuff, which is why it works, and he bounces off Carr, for want of a better phrase, with no small degree of skill.

Chat shows only really work when there’s a degree of love or hate between host and guest, rather than ambivalence, which is why this is good.

Maybe Mack could host his own. Certainly be cheaper than Jonathan Ross.
