HE’S a likeable sort, Rob Brydon.

Good in Marion And Geoff and excellent as Keith Barret, Brydon, as Uncle Bryn, was also by far the best character in Gavin And Stacey.

The Rob Brydon Show sees him bring his personality into the world of the chat show, the first of which saw him cosying up with David Walliams and Tom Jones among others, as well as showcasing a guest comedian.

Walliams remains laid-back despite a seemingly endless inquisition into his love-life and, instead of resisting questions, positively invites Brydon to build on speculation as to his sexual orientation.

It’s a good start and shows that Brydon’s friendly persona will help win over his guests while avoiding the over-the-top sycophantic mutual love-in that Jonathan Ross and his sofa of celebs shared.

Brydon’s stand-up section is strong and he also took the chance to singalong with Wales’ number one vocalist Aled Jones, sorry, Tom Jones, and more than held his own.

Guest stand-up Tom Deacon does okay and it’s nice to see a star allowing someone starting out on a showbiz career the chance to shine.

Hopefully, this show will finally give Brydon the opportunity to stand alone in a way that his previous TV work hasn’t.
