ISN'T it funny how one little thing can spoil your enjoyment of a whole programme?
I settled down to watch Rawtenstall-born Jane Horrocks delve into her family history in Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC2, looking forward to seeing places I recognised and interesting facts about Bubble.
But then the narrator opened his mouth and ruined everything for me.
At the start of the programme Jane proudly declared she was born in Rawtenstall and added that people down south' always pronounce it wrongly.
So what did the voiceover man do? He called it Raw-tenstall (raw as in uncooked) all the way through. The first time he did it, it jarred. By the end of the programme I was getting ready to put my foot through the screen.
Surely you would have thought that someone on the production team would have spotted it. I'll wager everyone in East Lancashire did.
Dodgy pronunciation apart, there's always something magical about seeing your area' on TV. You spend half your time talking to yourself saying things like oh that's just down the road from the butchers' and trying to work out where the camera crew are stood to get a particular view.
As for Ms Horrocks, she seemed to warm to her task of playing Miss Marple' and discovered several secrets about her family's past.
The programme also gave us a glimpse of the social history and terrible deprivation in East Lancashire during the Industrial Revolution.
