NOMINATIONS have closed for this year’s Good Neighbours Awards with dozens of stories submitted of unsung heroes and individuals dedicated to the betterment of their communities.

More than 50 nominations have been received for the accolade, which has been organised by Blackburn with Darwen Council and the Lancashire Telegraph.

Residents were asked to recognise the efforts of the many “selfless and thoughtful” people in Blackburn with Darwen by nominating them for awards.

People responded in droves, with residents wishing to recognise contributions across the borough.

Entries will now be judged and those shortlisted will be informed in early summer.

A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “As always, the entries show the depth of community work and support of others goes on in the borough but which is often ‘invisible’ to many.

“The entries will be judged and an event organised in the summer to celebrate the winners’ achievements.”

Last year’s youngest winner was teenager Joe Lightbown, of Bolton Road, who had spent hundreds of hours helping neighbour Michael Crawford in his struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Others recognised at the heart-warming ceremony included 78-year-old Peter Leyden and running enthusiast Rick Wilson.

Prizes on offer for the winners include match day tickets and a meal for two at Ewood Park, a night in the Lake District and a £150 voucher for Stanley House Hotel and Spa in Mellor.

Sponsors for this year’s award include Capita, Blackburn Rovers, Blackburn with Darwen Clinical Commissioning Group, The Mall and The Pack Restaurant and Bar in Belthorn.

Rovers’ managing director Derek Shaw said: “Blackburn Rovers are very happy to support the awards.

“Any award which rewards and brings focus on members of the community helping others is something the club is proud to be associated with.”
