MORE than 260 older people gathered in the splendid surroundings of the King George’s Hall to enjoy an afternoon tea and a social gathering.
The Just Good Friends event was organised by the council to give an afternoon out to those who have worked hard in their life and are now enjoying retirement.

Council workers volunteered their time to help serve the tea and cake and entertainment was provided by Darwen vocalist Richard Lee who performed vintage songs.
The event had a serious point too, with those attending able to learn about council initiatives for older people, to be told about assisted technology and to speak to people from organisations such as Age Concern.
Among those attending was Anne Gleave who joined seven friends from Our Lady’s church.
She said: “It’s been a lovely event and it’s good to see the room full.”
The event was also used to publicise the Blackburn with Darwen Council Good Neighbours awards supported by the Lancashire Telegraph.
Nominations are now being sought.
Councillor Kate Hollern, leader of the council, who came up with the initial idea, said: “This is a really special event and it exceeded all expectations – it was wonderful that so many people came along and really enjoyed themselves.
“A big part of the Your Call campaign is building stronger communities in the borough and events like this can contribute to that.
“I want thank the businesses that sponsored the event, the acts that gave their time for the entertainment, the services which had a stall and staff who volunteered to help put this event on.”
