Congratulations to Sam Kirk who has been offered a place on a demanding five year higher apprenticeship at BAE Systems in Warton and Samlesbury after gaining grade A in A Level Biology and grade B in A Level Chemistry and Mathematics.
Sam, 18, from Heapey in Chorley, after a rigorous application process that consisted of an online application, aptitude testing, group work, tasks, presentations and interviews, gained a much sought after offer to undertake an apprenticeship in Project Management in the Military and Information field of the multimillion pound, global defence, aerospace and security company.
The apprenticeship includes 5 one year placements in the company as a Project Manager, where Sam will be the ‘eyes and ears’ of the project, ensuring it stays on track. He will be fundamental to the successful delivery of the BAE order book and prospects. Alongside his work placement, he will study for a Lancaster accredited Honours degree in Project Management. There is also the potential for a career with BAE on completion of the apprenticeship.
The apprenticeship is incredibly competitive with hundreds applying for just 18 positions. The Student Guidance team at St Mary’s College have been instrumental in Sam gaining a place. He says, “St Mary’s has advised and guided me at various stages of the process, preparing me for aspects of the interview and testing which I had minimal previous experience of. The support provided has not only helped me understand and succeed, but also how to prepare for any future competitive promotions as well. This quality service is invaluable and quite unique to St Mary’s; moreover my academic teaching staff have encouraged and supported me every step of the way”.
If all goes to plan, Sam aims to apply for a permanent managerial position in the Military Air and Information sector and to continue to gain experience in the business and use this to progress within BAE. Then, when and if the opportunity arises, travel abroad to see more of the world.
Sam says, “To be offered a Higher Apprenticeship at BAE Systems feels like my first real pay day. I have worked hard consistently in order to be in such a strong and sought after position at only 18 years old. I motivate myself to excel and achieve in everything I do and fully enjoy the challenges I face because of it. To me what I achieve represents who I am. To be offered a debt free start in a competitive career with hands on experience and an honours degree is an amazing opportunity. It not only displays great personal achievement but the success of those who helped me to succeed without whom, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am excited to experience what the company has to offer and cannot wait to prove myself further”.
