AT Brunshaw Avenue in Burnley residents ploughed on with their big event for the day despite the rain.
A marquee stretched the length of the road’s shops and was packed with families enjoying live music. Everyone got fed thanks to the local chippy.
The party was a joint venture between Brunshaw Action Group and Calico Homes, which manages a lot of housing in the area.
Dave Stevenson from the residents’ group and Josephine Trundle, Calico’s neighbourhood officer, employed some quick thinking when the inclement weather threatened to spoil the day.
Josephine said: “We had visions of lining the whole of Brunshaw Avenue with tables and chairs but that was impossible in this weather. We didn’t want to call things off so we set up by the shops, and we’ve worked thinks out with Brunshaw Fish and Chips to make sure everyone gets some food.
“We also had some very kind donations from local businesses.
“In some ways it’s quite fitting that it has rained, it makes the whole thing seem very British.”
Friends Eileen Charlton and Pat Hamer, both 70, said the party was as well-organised as anything they had seen before.
Pat said: “We go to see the Queen each time she visits Burnley and it’s wonderful that even in the modern age people come out to celebrate the monarchy.
“Things were different when she took to the throne, the Coronation was the first time a lot us watched a television and it was a very big deal as you never really knew what the Royal Family looked like. Now with technology you see them all the time.”
