WE’RE always featuring lads’ school classes and sports teams, so this week we’re putting the ladies in the picture!
Our first photograph is a little battered, but it is more than 60 years old.
It shows form 1b of Blakey Moor Girls School, back in 1948 and has been sent to us by Maureen Saxton.
She has pointed out a young pupil who grew up into a popular actress — seated on the left is Shirley Broomfield, who became Shirley Anne Field.
Her classmates in their gymslips are back row, left to right: Margaret Munroe, Maureen, whose maiden name was Cottam, Audrey Sharples, Ann Slinger, Deirdre Furness, Sheila Walsh and Joan Walsh.
Then there’s Shirley, Ida Place, Barbara Downs, Audrey Smith, Violet Parkinson, Mavis Monks, Janet Wales and Margaret Croft.
Sat on the mat are Rita Green and Mary Holland, with Paddy, the pet of headmistress Miss Hampton.
The second picture has found its way to Looking Back all the way from Australia and shows class 2a of Avondale Girls School, Darwen, taken in 1952.
It’s been sent in by Marlene Haworth, nee Greenwood, and although she recalls some of the names, she would be delighted if anyone can recognise any others.
On the back row are, left to right: Doreen Proctor, Marion Ruston, Patsy Durkin, ?, Marlene, Rosamond Bowen, Valery Sharples, Joan Ruston, ?, ?.
In the middle row is: Florence Nightingale, Miriam Walsh, ?, Barbara ?, ?, ?, ?, Brenda Quirk ,? and Mrs Parsons the English and history teacher.
On the front are: Anne Brooks, Dorothy Longworth, ?, ?, Eileen Nicholson, Kathleen Banks, ?, ?, Susan Sager and Mildred Foster, while sitting are Mary Howorth and a girl she does not recall.
Who remembers the teachers at the time: Miss Holden, who taught maths and science, Miss Holgate for music, Mrs Whalley who took needlework, Miss Wood and Miss Whittaker the cookery teachers, Mrs Braithwaite who took PT and Miss Trippot the headmistress?
If you’d like to get in contact with Marlene, her email address is roy7mar@tadaust.org.au.
