HERITAGE experts are hoping to put in place a boundary marker to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the borough of Burnley.
Burnley Civic Trust wants to lay a replica of the merestone which was put at the bottom of Manchester Road to mark the town’s boundaries in 1819.
The trust is trying to raise £4,500 for the inscribed stone and a display board, opposite the Swan Hotel, showing how the town used to look.
It said the project would be ‘seen by all of those who traverse the area and of great interest to those who visit the centre of Burnley.’ However, the fundraising drive has suffered a setback after one councillor, Burnley South West Lib Dem Jeff Sumner, decided not to award it £150 from his local member grant allocation.
Coun Sumner said he wanted to direct the grants to projects in his ward.
