ONE of the biggest and best carnival processions ever seen in East Lancashire – that was the verdict on Nelson hospitals’ gala cavalcade in 1962.
Two miles long, the parade was watched by more than 15,000 people as it made its way through the town to the carnival field at Seedhill.
And gala secretary Harry Howarth was confident of raising the £500 target to complete a new physiotherapy building at the Marsden Hospital.
Star guests at the event were Miss World Rosemary Frankland, and pop idol Marty Wilde.
The procession was made up of 30 morris dancing troupes, scores of industrial and commercial floats, a host of gala queens and their retinues, highland dancers, Nelson Civic Band, Colne Borough Band, Lochanside Pipe Band, scouts, guides, entertainers, and local societies.
