IT’S almost 70 years since this photo was taken of a group of lads from All Saints Church, in Blackburn, enjoying a summer holiday.

The few days away were organised by the vicar, the Rev Bateson, and the verger Sam Smith, who were responsible for the food and activities.

The picture, dating from 1940/41, has been sent to us by Tom Wrigley, who’s on the left of the second row.

He recalls: “The holiday was in a small valley, close to Wolfen Hall Farm, Chipping, at the base of Parlick Pike and I remember the farmer loaned us a small cart and horse to get all the gear to the site and supplied us with straw to fill our palliasses.

“Two of us had to go to Chipping bakery for bread each day.

“I’m sure none of us had more than £1 for the week, but we still had a great time.”

Tom remembers Frank Ellison, Derrick Smith and Eddy Orrel – the lad on the right with the skull and crossbones on his chest – but is unsure of any others.

Maybe readers can put names to the other faces.
