AN MP has called for a permanent memorial to be erected in memory of the men who served in Bomber Command during the Second World War.

Hyndburn MP Greg Pope has now tabled a House of Commons motion about the proposed memorial.

He said: “Bomber Command seem to be the only major branch of our armed services which don’t have a national memorial.

“This may be in part due to the post-war controversy over the allied policy of bombing, but it is all too easy to forget the heroism of the bomber crews.”

More than 55,000 men from Bomber Command died during the war, almost half the total who served.
