THIS school photograph shows young pupils in form 4A at Blackburn High School for Girls in 1949. It’s been sent in by Eileen Blackburn who tells us she and her classmates were the first pupils to take the new GCSE ‘O’ levels in 1951.
They were obviously showing off some trophies they had won, too.
And Eileen can name tall her former classmates: On the back row, left to right are: Lois Waring, Doris Sharples, Joan Whalley, Heather Powell, Miriam Wolf, Doreen Jackson, Audrey Walton and Hazel Taylor.
On the row in front are: Margaret Woodhouse, Iris Hadfield, Betty Kay, Kathleen Fox, Evelyn Holden, Margaret Haythornwhite, Edna Duxbury, Pat McClellan, Shirley Stansfield and Dorothy Read.
Sitting: Joyce Dewhurst, Helen Farrar, Eileen Bradbury, Marlene Rishton, Shirley Whittle, Jean Aspinall, Marjorie Eatough, Doreen Holland and Anne Frankland.
At the front, Pat Whitehead, Mavis Lee, Julie Maltby, Diana Goldberg, Ruth Tattersall and Marjorie Caunce.
