Thanks to all the readers who gave us aid with our two photographs of ambulancemen from the 1960s, which appeared on our page last week.

Many of you recognised several faces and gave us information to help identify the who, what, and where.

One who contacted us was former ambulanceman Derek Holt, of Burnley, who ran the social club for 25 years, organising a variety of functions, such as dances, and snooker and football matches.

He told us the picture was taken at Lea, near Preston, at the service's training centre, where staff from throughout the county used to attend for further training every few years.

He recognised Peter Wilkinson, who went on to become Lancashire's chief ambulance officer, Fred Dickson, John Bancroft and Joe Walmsley, all of Burnley.

Other faces named were Bill Allott, a former shop steward, Bill Haynes, of Nelson, and shift leader Robert Pollard, of Brierfield.

Derek attended the training centre himself in 1973 and he remembers it was run as a regimental course and staff had a daily parade.

"The ambulance service was run like that in those days, the uniform highlights that. Indeed, if you were even spotted without your cap in the cab of the ambulance, there was trouble.

"When I look back, it's amazing how many ambulancemen courted nurses in those days and Burnley General Hospital was the scene for many a marriage proposal!"
