FIVE decades and more ago, Australia opened its doors, inviting families to make the country their new home.
And under an assisted travel scheme, the fare for a couple was just £20.
In this advert from 1959, Australia was calling Lancashire with news of unique opportunities for Britons to build a new life in this peaceful and prosperous country.
There’s work in plenty, excellent pay, and every chance to get on, it advised. The climate is wonderful and leisure activities abound.
Now, a new expanded assistant package scheme brings Australia nearer than ever before.
For only £10, adults can travel to Australia. Single men and women and couples without children may be accepted on the merits of their application.
Under 19s travel free to Australia, so a whole family can emigrate for just £20 if they have the promise of employment or a place to stay.
With Australia calling families to share in its golden future, East Lancashire folk could post a coupon or visit the Australia Migration office in St Peter’s Square, Manchester.
